Who will win the 2010 ANZ Championship - Part 2
January 4th 2010 10:14
Despite having a disastrious season last year, you should never discount the NSW Swifts from a premiership title.
They were victorious in 2008, the first ever ANZ Championship, and in the old Commonwealth Bank Trophy the Swifts along with the Melbourne Phoenix, were the main players.
But with the high quality of several other teams in the ANZ Championship, you must wonder can the Swifts do it again.
Most of the changes to this year's line-up include new players to the ANZ Championship, including Kimberley Borger, Ashleigh Brazill and Courtney Tairi.
Another new player to the Sydney team, Sonia Mkoloma (Pulse 2008, Tactix 2009), could make a huge difference to this year's prospects for the Swifts.
Losing extremely-talented defenders, Liz Ellis and Mo’onia Gerrard, over the last few years have really put a dent in the Swifts' defence. But this is where Mkoloma may make her mark as she is a quality player.
Mkoloma has played for England since 2003 and was a member of the bronze winning team at the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games.
But Catherine Cox will need to lift her shooting percentage this year after a dreadful season in 2009 if the NSW Swifts have any chance of making the finals let alone actually winning the championship.
