Shock loss for the NSW Swifts in Major Semi-Final
June 27th 2010 11:09
After being undefeated all the 2010 ANZ Championship home and away season, the NSW Swifts were convincingly defeated this afternoon in the Major Semi-Final against the Adelaide Thunderbirds.
The Thunderbirds turned their poor form around from last weekend's loss to the Waikato/Bay of Plenty Magic.
The NSW Swifts took the early lead but it didn't last long as the Adelaide Thunderbirds settled into the match.
The Thunderbirds changed their starting line-up, opting for Erin Bell as goal attack, replacing Kate Beveridge who has struggled in patches to fine form this year.
It paid huge dividends for the Thunderbirds with the Adelaide side flogging the Swifts 52-38. This is not only the Swifts first loss of the season but their lowest score. It wasn't a happy day out for the Swifts particularly for the shooting combination of captain Catherine Cox and Susan Pratley who was off target this afternoon.
Cox had to be benched after suffering a thigh injury and a broken nose in the semi-final.
The Swifts have one last chance to make the grand final when they host the preliminary final next weekend against the winner of the Waikato/Bay of Plenty Magic and Southern Steel semi-final tomorrow night.
The Thunderbirds will now host the grand final for the first time. They lost last year's grand final to the Melbourne Vixens and in 2008 they narrowly missed out on making the final after being defeated by the Magic by just two goals in the preliminary final.
The Thunderbirds is the only Australian team to contest in every finals series of the ANZ Championship.
