Round 8 Result: Swifts keep their unbeaten record in tact
May 9th 2010 09:42
A lot of people tipped the Adelaide Thunderbirds to win today's clash in a close contest against the NSW Swifts in Sydney.
In the round two clash, while the Thunderbirds' new shooting combination of Carla Borrego and Kate Beveridge were still learning to work together, the Swifts won by only seven goals.
With that combination working well together of late and with a four-game winning streak, it was thought that they were capable of taking the win in a close match.
Unfortunately, it was all one-way after the first quarter. The Swifts only had a 15-13 lead at the first break with the momentum seemingly going with the Thunderbirds.
But from the second quarter, it was like a different team stepped out on court, the Thunderbirds gave away plenty of turnover ball and shooting accuracy was down.
Beveridge was benched, unable to convert, with Erin Bell taking the goal attack bib with little impact.
The Swifts gave the Thunderbirds every opportunity to take the match with a spell of poor shooting from Catherine Cox and Susan Pratley and some turnover ball themselves but the Thunderbirds could not capitalise on it. The Swifts were able to settle and stregthened their margin to a 60-44 win at the final whistle.
The path to the finals doesn't come any easier for the Thunderbirds, coming up against the Melbourne Vixens next weekend.
The Thunderbirds may lose their fourth position on the ladder if the Southern Steel are able to defeat the Northern Mystics in Monday night netty.
