Round 7 Result: Second straight loss for the reigning premiers
May 2nd 2010 10:53
This afternoon's Clash of the Premiers failed to deliver a close encounter as expected with the Melbourne Vixens suffering the biggest loss to the NSW Swifts in the ANZ Championship history.
This followed a shocking 21-goal loss to the Queensland Firebirds last Sunday.
Prior to these two games, the Melbourne Vixens were undefeated and on top of the ladder. Depending on the result of the Magic/Mystics game tomorrow might, the Vixens may find themselves in third place.
The Swifts edged in front from the first centre pass and continued to dominate the Vixens until the third quarter, in which the Melbourne side won by seven goals. After obtaining a one-goal lead, the Vixens once again continued to turnover the ball with simple mistakes, letting Swifts to get out to once again a sizeable margin.
The final score was Swifts 56 Vixens 42.
The shooting accuracy for both teams were impressive, particularly for Vixens' Sharelle McMahon and Swifts' Catherine Cox.
Caitlin Thwaites was back in the shooting circle for the Vixens after sitting on the bench last week. It was reported that Thwaites was out due to 'player management' so speculation surrounds what she did wrong.
It was noticeable that the team atmosphere, particularly between McMahon and Thwaites, was damaged. Thwaites struggled in the game with McMahon doing a lot of the work.
The Vixens' midcourt also struggled again without Natasha Chokljat.
The 2009 champions come up against the West Coast Fever next weekend, will they be able to turn their game around and show us their winning form?
They could still be without Chokljat.
It is very disappointing as a spectator as well as a Vixens fan to watch such a brilliant team full to pieces.
We don't want another season like 2008, particularly after a brilliant start to 2010.
