Round 14 Result: Magic cement their finals chances
June 20th 2010 11:02
The Waikato/Bay of Plenty Magic found some surprising form yesterday afternoon to beat the Adelaide Thunderbirds 53-44 in Rotorua.
There was a lot of talk in the last couple of weeks saying the Magic may miss their first ever finals series due to their recent poor form. They only just beat the Central Pulse and have lost three of their last four outings.
But, they played to win yesterday, with the Thunderbirds struggling to get into the match.
The Thunderbirds have already cemented second spot, coming into this game.
This was a must-win match for the Magic to play in the finals.
The telling statistic was Kate Beveridge who shot at a lousy 25 per cent accuracy rate as goal attack in the first half.
Surprising everyone, at the main break, the Thunderbirds decided to bench Carla Borrego, the competition's most prolific shooter, despite her still being the best of the two shooters.
Beveridge was put into the goal shooter position and it was like a different person on court. Her accuracy was much better but still not good enough to take the win.
The Magic had only three attempts more at goal than the Thunderbirds but were more accurate under the post than their Australian counterparts.
