Round 13 Result: Criticism of NZ teams continue after Tactix's massive loss
June 14th 2010 13:59
Once again the ANZ Championship came under fire tonight after the Queensland Firebirds thrashed the Canterbury Tactix by a massive 43 goals in Brisbane.
Eight rounds ago, New Zealand's Central Pulse were criticised, after they lost to the Adelaide Thunderbirds by 35 goals. It was said then that no team in the ANZ Championship should lose by such a large margin.
Yet, we are only weeks out from finals, and another New Zealand team, the Tactix, got flogged by an even bigger margin.
Interestingly, both the Firebirds and the Thunderbirds scored 75 goals, but the Tactix was restricted to just 32 goals compared to Pulse's 40 in round five.
The Pulse and the Tactix are fighting out at the bottom of the ladder and after tonight's game, the Tactix look certain to take the wooden spoon in 2010.
Back in round five, it was questioned whether New Zealand could maintain five teams in such a competitive championship and this was raised yet again tonight.
It's interesting that the bottom two teams are New Zealand sides when they have the unfair advantage of only playing the stronger Australian teams once in a season.
It was also brought to light that the Kiwi sides train only once a week together compared to Australia's four times a week.
How do they expect to be competitive in a semi-professional environment with one lousy training session a week?
I am a huge netball fan, that watches every single game every week, and have got many other people doing the same. But it was hard to keep interested tonight when there was such a blowout from the first quarter. The only entertainment we saw from the Tactix tonight was when shooter Anna Thompson showed her anger towards the Firebirds' Laura Geitz.
Something needs to happen soon to the ANZ Championship, this was a huge move forward for netball, before it loses fans and credibility. The old Commonwealth Bank trophy is starting to look more competitive than the ANZ Championship despite the old competition usually seeing only Melbourne and NSW in the finals. At least, ALL teams played some quality netball and every team had a chance of winning games.
