June 5th 2010 04:52
It was an absolute thriller, with only a few goals in it, until the Northern Mystics stamped their foot down in the final quarter, beating the West Coast Fever for the first time. The final score in Auckland today was 62-53.
The Mystics got off to a sloppy start but it wasn't long before they got into the match and went goal for goal with the young Fever side.
The Mystics pushed ahead to lead by four goals at the main break but the Fever continued to fight back, winning the third term and coming within only two goals.
With a must-win game for the Mystics to keep their slim finals chances alive, they came out firing in the last quarter, giving spectators a brilliant term of netball.
The Fever's shooting accuracy was down yet on the other end of the court Mystics' Cathrine Latu shot an impressive 40 goals from 41 attempts at a 98 per cent success rate. Latu continued her strong take of the ball under the post.
Also impressive for the Mystics were Jenny-May Coffin and as always Althea Byfield.
They have now slipped into fifth spot at the start of round 12. This has pushed the defending premiers, the Melbourne Vixens, into seventh position, undoubtedly their worst season ever.
Today's game is only the second time the Mystics have defeated an Australian team in three years of the ANZ Championship.
