Round 12 Result: It's goodbye for the Vixens

June 6th 2010 08:33
It is so hard to believe that the defending champion, the Melbourne Vixens, are now out of finals contention with two rounds to go.
Their chances were slim before they even took to the caught this afternoon in front the largest competition crowd of about 9500 people in Melbourne.
But this is, the Melbourne Vixens, we are talking about.
The team that had an awesome season last year and started the 2010 season like they ended the 2009 one; in great winning form.
They won their first five games and were, as expected, on top of the ladder. Then came an injury to midcourter Natasha Chokljat and this spelt the end to the Vixens back-to-back title campaign. Defender Julie Corletto was the next player to spend weeks on the bench, recovering from surgery. Shooter Caitlin Thwaites struggled with form. They lacked team work and the flow of ball that is so usually beautiful for the Vixens attack wasn't there. But you just kept thinking the Vixens will come back and make the finals. Afterall they were one of the strongest teams in the competition.

The Vixens were devasted in the inaugural ANZ Championship to finish in fourth position. Called 'the dream team', they failed to deliver on expectations but at least made the finals. They are now sitting in seventh position with a game against the undefeated NSW Swifts next week. Will this be their seventh straight loss? It is unbelievable to associate this statistic with the Melbourne Vixens but it does look probable. What is happening in the Vixens camp? Hopefully, they will be able to defeat the bottom-placed Central Pulse in their final round match to avoid total embarrassment.
The Vixens lost to the Adelaide Thunderbirds this afternoon 54-43. Impressive for the Thunderbirds was, as usual, shooter Carla Borrego.

The Vixens, at least, fought it to the end, with co-captain Sharelle McMahon, and midcourters Renae Hallinan and Chokljat having impressive games. It just wasn't enough. In the off-season, they will no doubt be looking at the shooting position and depth in their bench to hopefully return to the mighty Vixens that we know and love in 2011.
