The first three quarters of this afternoon's game between the Queensland Firebirds and the Central Pulse in Brisbane was so unexpected.
The bottom-placed Pulse had an impressive lead at the first break of 13-8.
The Firebirds had a lot better second quarter, taking a narrow 24-22 lead going into the main break.
But the Pulse kept fighting, only being three goals down at three quarter time, but unfortunately couldn't keep up the momentum in the final stanza.
The Firebirds were lucky to take the win and push it out to a 10-goal margin. The final score was 52-42.
The Pulse have had strong games in four of the past five weeks.
Queensland shooter Romelda Aiken missed a lot of shots right under the post, with a final success rate of 78 per cent, the worst on court. It was a lot lower in the first half.
With such a shocking game, there's question marks over the Firebirds' form so close to finals time.
They did lose Sarah Wall last week with a season-ending injury but it was expected that they could beat the bottom-placed Pulse by at least 20 goals.
The Firebirds have the easiest run into the finals, taking on the Canterbury Tactix in ninth position next week and the West Coast Fever, eighth on the ladder, in the final round of home and away competition. None of these teams are in finals contention.
The Firebirds have missed out on finals chances in the past two seasons of the ANZ Championship on percentage and need to win every game and get as many goals as possible to have any chance in 2010.
