Round 1 Result: NSW Swifts turn their losing streak around
March 21st 2010 09:34
The NSW Swifts have turned their losing streak around, beating the Queensland Firebirds today 50-47 at the Gold Coast. This is the Swifts first win in nearly 12 months. They showed the same talent as they did in 2008 when they were the inaugural winners of the ANZ Championship.
Catherine Cox found her shooting accuracy once again, putting in an amazing effort despite her recent foot surgery. Rebecca Bulley and Sonia Mkoloma also played outstanding games for the Swifts.
New Queensland Firebird Natalie Medhurst didn't make the impact that was expected, sometimes throwing the ball away. She did have a great first quarter.
However, with time, Medhurst and Romelda Aiken should combine well and make this shooting combination one of the best in the championship.
The Firebirds were let down by their inexperienced defence with new recruit Amy Steel, former Vixen, lacking court time in the ANZ Championship.
Another ex-Vixen Sarah Wall is also an up-and-coming player.
Firebirds defender Laura Geitz put in a fine game but at times was costly for the Firebirds.
Both teams put in a fine display for the start of this year's championship.
