Round 1 Result: Mystics take their first Australian Win
March 20th 2010 08:11
The Northern Mystics made history today, winning their first game against an Australian team since the ANZ Championship's inception two years ago.
With only four players from last year remaining with the New Zealand team, the new Mystics side took charge of the game against Adelaide Thunderbirds early on and maintained their lead right throughout the match.
One stage in the second half, the Mystics even led last year's grand finalists by 10 goals.
Defender Althea Byfield proved vital in the Mystics 55-52 win as did the new shooting combination of Cathrine Latu and Maria Tutaia.
Injured Joline Henry also had a great game, coming on in the second half for the Mystics.
With the loss of Goal Attack Natalie Medhurst, the Adelaide Thunderbirds tried a new combination with Kate Beveridge slotting in as GA and former Jamaican international Carla Borrego taking the Goal Shooter bib with great accuracy. Borrego proved to be a great addition to the Thunderbirds line-up but was not enough for her team to take the win.
The game's intensity also proved too much for one of the umpires with her being injured during the match and a replacement umpire coming onto the court.
