Golf in the Olympics
June 9th 2009 16:50
I have heard that some of the bigwigs in golf, such as Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Colin Montgomery among others, are pushing for golf to be added to the ever-growing number of Olympic sports.
If this idea is accepted, I would like to think that the likes of the golfers named above will forego putting (excuse the unintentional pun) their names forward as participants. The top golfers in the world earn vast amounts of money before they even tee off at a tournament; and earn more in prize money. As with other stars in other sports, they have bank balances and assets the mere mortal fans can only dream of.
The idea of millionaires entering into an Olymic tournament to satisfy their egoistical ambitions and therefore denying some youngster a place in the team is somewhat repugnant to me. There are many golfers, either amateur or rookie professionals, who will never be given a chance to win anything throughout their playing careers, whether that be part-time or full-time.
As the cost of hosting the Olymic Games soars forever higher, fewer countries will be able to afford to hold them. The idea of adding another sport to the already packed schedule will surely mean either:
a. The time-span for the games will have to be lengthened.
or
b. Another sport will have to be dropped.
If golf is inaugurated, then I sincerely hope that the millionaire professionals only apply as coaches and do not play. Allow the men and women lower in the pecking order to be given the chance of glory.
Come to think of it, wasn't it Tiger Woods who suggested at one time that he and his fellow millionaires should be paid for representing their country in the Ryder Cup? Hmm...he must have found an empty drawer in his mansion which is empty and needs to be filled, naturally, with dollar bills.
