Changes to next year's ANZ Championship
June 3rd 2010 09:35
There's been quite a few changes announced to the format of the 2011 ANZ Championship. Unfortunately, the one change that is desperately needed won't happen; the championship will still remain unfair with the New Zealand teams only playing the Aussie teams once and Kiwi teams twice, giving them an unfair advantage since the Aussies are so much stronger.
The changes, unfortunately, doesn't sound good for the sport. First of all, it will be a condensed competition, going for only 15 weeks instead of the current 17 weeks.
It will start earlier, with round 1 in mid-February and the grand final planned for May instead of July.
Thursday night games will also be trialled.
There will be no bye rounds but players are expected to compete in double headers where they will have to play two games in certain rounds.
As Vicki Wilson states on the smh.com.au website, this has the potential to increase the number of injuries sustained by netballers.
We have seen so may injuries this year, particularly knee injuries, and it has affected the quality of the game.
Let's improve the ANZ Championship, have it a longer competition and have each team play each other twice. I have introduced many people to the game of netball and the ANZ Championship, don't take a backward step and ruin this awesome game.
